Caramel Squares

1 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup butter
1 egg
1 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup nuts, chopped
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Heat sugar and butter in a saucepan, stirring constantly until sugar is
thoroughly dissolved. Do not boil.  Let cool.  Beat the egg well, stir in
flour with baking powder, salt, then nuts and vanilla.  Spread in a greased
9-inch square pan. Bake 20 minutes in a moderate oven, 350 degrees. Cut in
squares and cool in pan.
