Our experience with Best Buy

I think that "Worst Buy" might be closer to the truth. In February of 2009 we purchased a Canon Powershot A2000 IS digital camera. This is a very nice camera and we would reccommend it to anyone. At their suggestion we purchased the four year extended warranty. According to them this would allow us to return the camera for full replacement or repaire for four years. We had it repaired once within the original warranty period with no problem.

Then in June 26, 2010 we had a problem. It was fine most of the day and then it suddenly failed to open the lens. No problem, we thought. With our extended warranty all we had to do was bring it back for their "hassle free" service. We brought it back and the clerk looked at it, tried different batteries and pulled on the lens ring to see if it would come out. Nothing worked so they returned it to the depot for repair.

Come July 10, 2010 and we received a call from the repair depot telling us that it would not be repaired under warranty because it was physical damage. I was confused as there was no damage when we dropped it off.

They sent the picture below showing the damage. as you can see the damage consists of a slight buckling on the flat ring around the lens. I don't believe that that should be enough to void a warranty but the crux of the matter is that we did not see this damage when we brought it in and as best as I can tell, it happened when the clerk tried to pull the lens out when we brought it in.

Let's make that last point again. The damage was done by the clerk while trying to determine what was wrong. The camera was already broken at that point. That's why it was in his hands.

People always say to refuse extended warranties because they have a poor return on investment. It turns out that at Best Buy it's even worse than that. Even when you do need it they can find an excuse to refuse to fix it, even if they have to break it themselves to do so.
